Trip to Michigan in the Summertime
Deciding to go to Michigan this Summer was a complete spur of the moment decision and I am so glad I made it! Less than two weeks before the trip, my friend Brooke asked me if I would want to go with her and her parents to Michigan!
The trip was mainly to visit family and explore her hometown. She also was needing help traveling with her at-the-time two and a half-month-old son, Clayton James, who also happens to be my godson! And I am always up for spending time with my godson and traveling! It was the perfect excuse for a getaway!
We had talked about visiting Michigan so many times and this time it finally happened. The decision to go was made within minutes! A couple hours later I booked my flight and 10 days later we were on our way!
Here are some of the highlight of our week in Michigan!
My camera was packed away while we were traveling so the first handful of photos are iPhone photos.
First stop, Tim Hortons, of course!
Then some of our favorite things… Thrifting, Sushi & more coffee!!I was introduced to Bob Evens, or how they call it, “Bob Heavens”! Life changed. Now the real photos begin! 🙂 The first few days were spent in the countryside. Gorgeous sunsets.
Brooke knows how obsessed I am with Christmas so she made it a point to get us to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland!! They are known as the world’s largest Christmas store! It was HUGE!! This is just 1/100th of the store!! Notice the sign that says “Section 10a”! The cutest little town! Then we packed up and went over to Brooke’s brother and sister-in-law’s home!
C.J. had many emotions about it! 😉 This kid cracks me up!
Lake Michigan AKA “The Beach”
It was quite a hike to get to this “beach”! Over 400 steps (just one way) to be exact. Something this Florida girl isn’t used to! But it was so worth it! So so beautiful! Brooke took my camera from me and captured me eating my favorite—Watermelon!! After lunch and portraits, we packed up and prepared to make the hike back while we all still had energy! Stopping for more portraits along the way! That light!! Brooke’s sister and her hubby! We ended the day with a campfire and music.
The Upper Penisula
We began the day with a lovely family breakfast. Then Brooke spotted this gazebo a block away so naturally more family portraits were in order!
How cute are Brooke’s parents!?
Then a Wagner family portrait! Then it was my turn! Thanks for these Vicky!
Then we hit the road again traveling north towards the Upper Penisula! Right before crossing the Mackinac Bridge we stopped to see the downtown area and a view of the bridge!
We just started walking and found this amazing view! How amazing is that light!? My favorite photo of C.J. and I! Then we found a lighthouse! Then we crossed the Mackinac Bridge and headed to Brooke’s childhood home in Sault Ste. Marie! First stop, Brooke’s childhood home! Then their favorite spot to grab a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings! After hearing so much about this place I was pretty excited to try it! Brooke was over the moon! 🙂 Then we head to a friends cabin where we would be staying for the next few nights!
Day 2 in Upper Peninsula
The next day we stopped by Brooke’s old home again! In her childhood bedroom with her little one! Then we have a yummy lunch at a local favorite–Penny’s Kitchen! Brooke sitting in her favorite chair! The same chair she would sit in as a little girl most days after school.
After lunch, we explored Sault Ste. Marie! I was in love with all the flowers EVERYWHERE!! Then we drove back to the cabin as the sun was setting!
The Wagner’s friend, Marsha, so graciously opened up her lovely cabin for us to stay a few days. After a few wonderful nights at Marsha’s cabin, she sent us off with a warm delicious homemade breakfast! She made homemade blueberry pancakes with wild blueberries, fresh homemade jam, real maple syrup, sausage and homemade berry-bread!! IT WAS SO GOOD!! Basically, a breakfast fit for a king!
After breakfast, I explored the land surrounding the cabin and we captured a few portraits! It was a beautiful start to our amazing day!
YUM!! The cabin was built on the family’s pine tree farm! There were pine trees as far as the eye can see in perfectly lined rows! That morning light was perfect!! I loved all the details of this gorgeous log cabin! That’s a bumblebee on that flower!! Such an amazing cabin! Then I captured a few portraits of the Wagner’s with Marsha!
After leaving Marsha’s cabin, we headed south toward MACKINAC ISLAND!! Visiting Mackinac Island was a dream come true! This was my favorite part of the whole trip! The perfect ending to our amazing trip!
Brooke grabbed my camera and took a cool shot of her shoes! Star Line ferry took us to Mackinac Island!
First stop, Starbucks! As I was giving C.J. his bottle, Brooke went outside and captured these fun shots! I love them so much! Love this island!
There were so many pretty pink peonies!
This purple flower was HUGE! Ladybug. Then we had a delicious lunch at the Pink Pony! C.J. just looking so cute on a park bench! Then it was time for Murdick’s fudge! Mackinac Island is known for their fudge and boy, was it yummy! After soaking in the views, we headed to the Grand Hotel! Then we finally made it to the Grand Hotel! We were running late but we just had to take a few more photos in the phone booth! We made it just in time for the last ferry off the island! We got some amazing closeup views of the Mackinac Bridge! The next day we headed home and our wonderful trip came to an end. Thank you, Jim, Vicky & Brooke for introducing me to Michigan! I love Michigan! But don’t tell my Ohioan In-laws! 😉
